The Great Conjunction of 2020

“Evolving as individuals, we carry humanity on our backs. The notion that the plane of mankind’s spiritual development is in a process of ascension may hardly seem realistic to a generation disillusioned with the dream of progress. Everywhere is war, corruption, and pollution. How could one reasonably suggest that the human race is spiritually progressing? Yet, that is exactly what I suggest. Our very sense of disillusionment arises from the fact that we expect more of ourselves than our forebears did for themselves. Human behaviour that we find repugnant and outrageous today, was accepted as a matter of course yesteryear.” - M. Scott Peck, The Road Less Travelled

Today, we witness, quite literally, the meeting of two heavyweights in the sky, Saturn and Jupiter, aligning in a conjunction at 0° Aquarius, the closest they have come together since 1623! Whilst these two meet every twenty years (the last time being May 28th 2000), this will be the first time in 200 years, that it will not occur in an Earth sign. And that holds a great deal of significance.

Why though? Essentially, when planets conjunct, it means that they are within a tight orb of one another (usually anywhere up to about 8° or 10°), which forces them to work together and harmonise their energies. Now, as two of the slowest moving planets in our solar system, the impact these two have together is felt on a global, social scale for generational periods. Which, with Saturn being representative of structure and authority, and Jupiter, expansion and growth, there is the potential, if balanced and utilised, to see us make real, long-lasting, positive, impactful changes within the way we as a society function.

Add to this, that they’re beginning this twenty year journey of collaboration in the sign of Aquarius. A sign which stands for freedom and equality. We’ve already had a preview of the Saturn in Aquarius effect, back when the planet retrograded into the sign from March 21st until July 1st. Global national lockdowns, the death of George Floyd, and the Black Lives Matter protests that followed. Our society was shaken (Uranus) awake from its authoritative (Saturn) slumber and called to take action against oppression. To take a stand. To be our own authority, by asking questions and speaking up and out.

Now here we are again, about to embark upon an entirely new, centuries long, path of social and progressive activism, especially highlighted by the 0° of Aquarius that this conjunction is occurring in. For the past 200 years we’ve been living under the energies of Earth signs, which has kept society weighed down by and focused on the material; money, success, status, greed, and power. Now however, we’re entering into an Air sign era, which with Aquarius’ progressive, futuristic energy, will most likely see us shift to a much more humanistic, technological, and inclusive focus.

On a personal level, this changing of the guard is bound to have felt like a tight squeeze over the past few weeks, as we finished up our journey through the last degrees of Capricorn’s rule. As we start to move deeper into the energies of Aquarius, we should slowly begin to feel the relief and the release. We may also sense an internal call to take action in making changes in our lives. But, this is where we must learn to move out of our own way and take advantage of the benefits on offer, especially during this turbulent time in our world’s rich history.

If we understand that Saturn is representative of our past, Jupiter and Aquarius our potential future, then we see that their recurrent meetings are to discuss what we have learnt over the past two decades - both as a collective and as individuals - in order to evaluate what needs changing and what we can take forward. So, now is an important time for us to focus on what it is we truly wish to create in this lifetime and acknowledge what has been holding us back; internally, emotionally, mentally, or structurally. If we’re willing to do the work, Jupiter is guaranteeing its blessing, the longevity of which will be ensured by Saturn.

So, now is the time to initiate our dreams, to pursue our purpose!
